Quinceañeras
A quinceañera is a birthday celebration for a girl that turns 15 years of age. It is the celebration of coming of age from a little girl to a young lady, upholding the responsibilities of a good Christian follower in society as they live their lives. It is such a big event, that it is as big as a wedding. The occasion starts with a church ceremony and then it ends with a party at the reception hall.
Sponsors and / or godparents, which are chosen by the parents of the soon-to-be quinceañeras, are the ones that spend money to prepare the quinceañera's day of celebration. In many situations, the parents take the full financial responsibility, or they share with family members.
If there are godparents or sponsors, each one of them would have a financial responsibility to purchase the services and items to make the quinceañera a success. The services and items needed, depending on the religious denomination, would be:
- Foot caterers
- Decorations
- The reception hall or even a home (if large enough)
- Limousine
- Photographer (that is us)
- Video
- Music or DJ
- Live band optional (may include Mariachis)
- White dress
- 2 pairs of white shoes (one for the event and the other for the reception)

In some of the families, religious domination parties that include alcohol and dancing are excluded. It also depends on the decision of the parents whether alcohol or dancing will be allowed. Whatever the case may be, most families will have a party to make their daughter's day memorable.
Church Ceremony
The ceremony may be held in either a Catholic or Christian domination church. It all depends on what religion the quinceañeras and her parents belong to. No matter what religion it is, the ceremonies have many things in common. Christian or Catholic religions emphasize to the quinceañeras that she has gone from a child to a young lady. They mention that being a young lady brings a lot of responsibilities. The responsibilities are to herself, her family, community, and the world in general. They emphasize moral responsibilities in general. A quinceañeras has to be a good example. She has to protect herself from all immoral acts of others, as well as those of her own. They emphasize respecting her parents, and denouncing all that is not of God.
The Waltz
The Waltz is a graceful dance done by the quinceañeras and her escort, called the chambelan. The court, that is also part of the dance, may be comprised of a group of couples or a group of young men. It is very beautiful to see, and in some instances, it is an emotional moment for the audience to see somebody become a young, decent, beautiful, and responsible young woman — a quinceañeras.
The Toast
The toast is usually done in all religions. The toast may be done with real champagne or with apple juice (Martinelli's).
The Cake
It does not matter what Christian religion you are in, the cake must be at a party. It is a very large cake, usually decorated with miniature dolls representing the quinceañeras and her court.
The Party
Oh yes, the best part of a quinceañera is the dance. Most quinceañeras consist of party music. Party music may consist of Rap, Reggae, House music, R&B, Pop dance songs, Norteañas, Quebraditas, and even Mariachi. Oh yes, even Merenge, Salsa, and Cumbias count as party music. Everybody loves to dance, so when the DJ starts playing, he'd better have good selections.
